Knowing Where Your Links Come From

One of the things that we do at CoDon Media Group is try to teach our clients about how they can grow their business through the use of search engines. To explain it simply, a search engine such as Google relies on links to gauge rank. In other words, the more links that your site gets, the more likely you are going to rank in the search engines. However, it’s not just the quantity of the links. It’s also the quality of each of these links. Having a thousand links from no name websites is not nearly as powerful as twenty links from very powerful sites.

Another factor that plays into it is how Google–or whatever search engine for that matters–rates that website. For example, if your site is one about cars and you’re being linked to from a slightly illicit website, Google might not take too kindly to that. It wants reputable websites to be on its top listings and therefore, if your links are sketchy, they are less likely to give you that top ranking. What this means is that it’s important to have a lot of links, high quality links and links from places that are actually good.

The problem is checking these links. Where can someone go to check their back links? A colleague of CoDon Media Group recently launched a website that is a backlink checker that allows you to check these backlinks. What it does is check how many links are linking to that page that is then linking to your page. In this age of SEO, it’s not just who is linking to, but who is linking to the web page that is linking to you. On top of that, how many links is that web page linking to? And, it tells you which web page it is so you can check to make sure it’s legitimate. If you don’t like it, you could request to have it removed. This backlink checker, therefore, is your way to keep an eye on the number of links and where those links are coming from.

When you’re building your business online and starting to do SEO, it’s imperative that you know where your links are coming from. Getting new links is great. However, if those links are poor quality, it can be disastrous to your efforts and a tremendous waste of money. At CoDon Media Group, we only look for high quality links for our clients. We work to get our clients to the front page of Google, but we don’t sacrifice the quality of the link to get there.
